Guidelines for Capital Grants

The Irene E. & George A. Davis Foundation awards Hampden County nonprofit organizations Capital Grants and uses the following criteria to guide its decision-making:

  • Grants will be awarded in support of capital projects such as construction, renovation or acquisition of land or buildings or other major equipment or furnishings
  • Investment in opportunities where the Foundation dollars can leverage other public and private funding are preferred; Foundation dollars are not intended to replace public dollars
  • Capital grants are expected to have feasibility studies as well as a financial assessment on the impact of the capital project (e.g. buying a new building) on the overall financial health of the organization
  • Where appropriate, an organization may be able to secure an Organizational Capacity Building Grant to assist with a financial analysis on the impact of the project on the organization's long-term finances
  • Priority for Capital Grants will be given to projects that are aligned with the Foundation's initiatives in support of Early Education Programs, Education K-12, and Out-of-School Time Programs
  • Priority will also be given for projects that support the planning, renovation and maintenance of playgrounds, athletic fields and indoor recreational facilities in support of children pre-school through high school.  Projects may include: outdoor classrooms, schoolyard improvements, school-based athletic fields, indoor gymnasiums, community centers, child care center play spaces, City park playscapes, etc.
  • Funding is targeted to communities that demonstrate financial need
